Dr. Melissa Sporn is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who has over 15 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and couples. She provides practical ways to approach some of life's most difficult challenges. Dr. Sporn offers individual, group, couples and family therapy. She specializes in treating relationship problems, developmental adjustments, depression, anxiety and survivors of trauma. Dr. Sporn holds a Master's in Social Work and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. These distinct training approaches have taught her sensitivity and creativity in understanding people and their challenges. Her extensive training has enabled her to hone her assessment and clinical skills. She is fluent in American Sign Language. Background and TrainingMelissa B. Sporn received her B.A. in psychology from University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She went on to receive her Master’s in Social Work from Yeshiva University. Dr. Sporn’s years in the field of social work afforded her solid clinical experience with individuals, families, couples, and groups. After working for several years she moved to the DC area to pursue a doctoral program at Gallaudet University. Dr. Sporn graduated with her Ph.D. in clinical psychology. PhilosophyDr. Sporn's approach to therapy is empathic and welcoming. Her primary goal is to provide her clients with a safe and confidential environment in which they can feel comfortable talking about their concerns. Dr. Sporn utilizes a Cognitive Behavioral therapy and humanistic approach to alleviate personal obstacles. Her therapeutic technique depends upon the problem, strengths, needs and style of the individual(s) seeking assistance. The most essential component of psychotherapy, in Dr. Sporn's opinion, is the development of a strong therapeutic alliance between the client and therapist. She views this relationship as collaborative; you will work together to improve your understanding of yourself and your difficulties. For this reason, she offers a free consultation to determine if the relationship fit is right for you. Dr. Sporn customarily consults with teachers, school counselors, psychiatrists and other professionals who are working with a client and/or family. When working with children and adolescents Dr. Sporn engages with the parents in an active and informative manner. Dr. Sporn believes that every problem contains the seeds of its own resolution.
